Vera Bittner, MD, MSPH, FACC is professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease, Department of Medicine, section head of Preventive Cardiology and medical director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr Bittner also directs the Cardiovascular Disease Residency Program at UAB. Dr Bittner obtained her medical degree from the University of South Alabama, College of Medicine and her masters of public health degree in epidemiology from the UAB School of Public Health. She completed her residency in internal medicine at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (now Wake Forest University Medical Center) and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the UAB in Birmingham, Alabama.

She is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Physicians. She serves on the board of the National Lipid Association and on several committees of the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association. Her research in various aspects of prevention of cardiovascular disease is supported by NHLBI as well as industry. Dr Bittner is currently on the editorial board of the American Heart Journal, Biocritique.com, Future Lipidology, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. She is also a reviewer for numerous journals and has published extensively in many peer-reviewed journals.
