L. Kristin Newby, MD, MHS, FACC, FAHA, associate professor of medicine, is also codirector of the cardiac care unit, leader of the primary care and acute cardiology practice group, and physician chair of the code blue committee at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. She received her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana, and her MHS in clinical research from Duke. She also completed her residency in medicine at Duke.

Dr Newby is a past director of the chest pain unit at Duke University Medical Center. She is a fellow of the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, and is a founding member of the Society of Chest Pain Centers and Providers. She is an active participant in several other organizations, including the Joint ESC-ACC-AHA-WHF Task Force for the Redefinition of Myocardial Infarction, and the National Association of Clinical Biochemists Writing Group. Dr Newby is an associate editor for American Heart Journal, a coronary artery disease section editor for Cardiology in Review, and serves on the editorial board for Critical Pathways in Cardiology. She is a frequent presenter and the author of several articles and publications. Her research interests include heart disease in women, and acute and chronic ischemic heart disease risk stratification, therapy and management strategies.
